DID YOU KNOW? Yugapurushan is based on the life of legendary philosopher and social reformer Sree Narayana Guru. R Sukumaran is a well known painter, who has directed films like Padamudra and Rajashilpi.
STORYLINE: Yugapurushan is intended to be a biopic on Sree Narayana Guru but it is more of a documentary. Several incidents from Kerala history become part of the narration and the film underlines the legend’s credibility as one of the greatest reformers who brought in changes in the social set up of the state.
Mammootty plays K C Kuttan, a firebrand follower of Sree Narayana Guru. There is a sub-plot involving the love affair between a Namboodiri girl played by Navya Nair and a low caste man played by Kalabhavan Mani.
REVIEW: The best thing about Yugapurushan is Thalaivasal Vijay, who looks perfect in the role that he is enacting. The film could have been a bit more fictional to make it more entertaining than the current format which almost looks like a documentary. Anyway, films like these should be encouraged to make us all understand about the past. The film succeeds in reminding us how great and noble were the thoughts and teachings of Sree Narayana Guru.
HIGHS: Guru’s presence is felt here.
LOWS: The conventional style
Verdict: 2.5 out of 5 (WATCHABLE)
