Mollywood is abuzz with issues but is anyone thinking about some solutions? Hope the industry bigwigs are storming their brains on those lines as well. The latest developments are the cancellations of shootings and a curb on the release of new films. Of course, the shootings which have been going on before the ban was imposed can continue. The issues have been raised by the Film Distributors’ and Film Exhibitors’ associations.
According to them the mounting production costs should be cut down. For this, the top stars should bring their rates down. The other demand is to take care of unnecessary spending by the technicians. Meanwhile there have been restrictions on the release of other language films in Kerala. Also cine artists have been given the diktat that they should not appear or anchor shows on TV.
Malayalam cinema is thriving these days eyeing on just one thing, the hefty satellite rights given by the various TV channels. The rumors doing the rounds in the industry is that some of the major TV channels have decided to be more careful while buying the satellite rights. Actually there have been suggestions doing the rounds that satellite rights should be decided based on the performance of the films in the theatres. Nowadays what happens is, every major actor has a set satellite rights slab and the films get it regardless of its show at the box office.
That is the reason why some of the big stars who did not have a single big hit during the recent years are still commanding hefty remuneration, as they are “super stars”. The situation needs to change, feels many.
The issues will mainly affect the release of two high profile projects, Satyan Anthikkad’s Kadha Thudarunnu and Vysakh’s Pokkiri Raja. Satyan Anthikkad has already raised his protests and we will keep you updated about the issues that will follow now.
