DID YOU KNOW? Neelathamara is the remake of an old film, scripted by M T Vasudevan Nair and directed by Yusuf Ali Kechery. It had Ambika playing Kunjimalu, Ravikumar as Haridas and Sathar as Appukkuttan. The film was not a big grosser when it was released then.
Lal Jose has remade the film, based on M T Vasudevan Nair’s script, with some brush ups to suit the current era. Archana Kavi plays Kunjimalu, Kailash is Haridas and Suresh is Appukkuttan in the new version.
STORYLINE: The story happens in a beautiful Valluvanaadan village, where Kunjimalu (Archana) comes to a traditional tharavaadu as a maid. Malukutty Amma (Sreedevi Unni) lives there alone and things get eventful as her son Haridas (Kailash) returns home after studies. He is smitten by the maid’s ample charms and the poor girl thinks they are in love! Her dreams are shattered when Kailash marries Rathnam (Samvrutha Sunil).
REVIEW: Unlike Nandanam, which had a rather similar theme, none of the characters makes an impact in the viewers’ minds in Neelathamara. Lal Jose presents some breathtaking visuals and the film attracts you with its honesty more than its storyline! Archana and Kailash have done decent jobs, but the rest of the characters are half-baked. Sharathe Ammini, played by Rima Kallingal, is an example.
The story is being narrated as a flashback and the main characters have all grown up and are happy with their own lives. Now, do we need to be so involved with Kunjimalu’s tale, when she herself has got over the episode pretty easily?
Vijay Ulakanath’s visuals are amazing and Vidyasagar’s tunes suit the mood.
HIGHS: You’ll learn why Kerala is called a beautiful land!
LOWS: You are ready to get involved in the story, but it makers don’t intend to do so!
Verdict: 2.5 out of 5 (ENTERTAINING)
